Noble Foundation Agricultural Guidelines for December
 
 
     
Economics
 • Record operating income and expenses.
• Prepare inventory and record all cattle deaths, purchases, sales and movements among pastures.
• Monitor monthly and year-to-date cash flow. and compare actual income and expenses to the budget.
• Summarize 11 months of income and expense records. and prepare second tax estimate for the year.
• Manage taxable income. Complete purchases of new equipment and facilities to take advantage of income tax benefits.
• Determine if financial and production goals set forth at the beginning of the year were met.
• Set goals for upcoming year that include the financial and production aspects of each enterprise.
• Prepare projected cash flow for upcoming year.
• Arrange for financing of production enterprises.
 
Fall Calving Cow-Calf
 • Monitor breeding activity and cow heat periods to ensure that the bulls are settling cows.
 
Forage
 • Continue use of stockpiled tall fescue and crop residues as available. and begin full use of cool-season annuals.
• Begin hay feeding, minimizing wastage and matching forage quality to livestock classes/herds.
• Monitor hay and standing forage inventories.
• Monitor and adjust grazing plan, as needed.
• Begin summarizing grazing records.
 
Horticulture
 • Complete harvest before January 1, if possible.
• Clean, grade and protect nuts from rodents.
 
Livestock-Cattle
 • Provide free-choice mineral supplement; monitor consumption.
• Follow Noble Foundation supplementation recommendations.
 
Soils
 • Collect soil samples.
• Apply lime, if recommended by soil test.
 
Spring Calving Cow-Calf
 • Supplement yearling heifers to reach 65-70% of mature body weight by the start of breeding season (mid-April).
 
Wildlife
 • If using green fireguards for late winter and early spring burns, mow green fireguards short, and rake mulch away from burn.
• If burning oak uplands, initiate burns after appropriate fireguard, equipment and prescribed burning plan preparations.
• Continue collecting wildlife harvest data.
• If using infrared-triggered camera surveys for deer or feral hog, prebait and conduct the surveys.
 
Winter Stockers
 • Monitor forage availability.
• Provide energy (grain) supplement with ionophore, if economically feasible.
