Noble Foundation Agricultural Guidelines for July

Economics
 • Record operating income and expenses.
• Prepare inventory and record all cattle deaths, purchases, sales and movements among pastures.
• Monitor monthly and year-to-date cash flow, and compare actual income and expenses to the budget.
• Develop market plan for spring-born calves.
• Prepare midyear financial statements.
• Analyze selling summer stockers vs. sending to feedlot.
• Consider price risk management on feedlot cattle.

Forage
 • Identify fescue pastures for accumulation of fall growth (stockpiling).
• Begin stockpiling native pastures for winter reserve.
• Clip pastures, as needed.
• Assess need for weed control in alfalfa.
• Discontinue haying of native pastures until after fall frost.
• Consider potential prussic acid accumulation when grazing sudan-type forages.
• Test hay for CP and TDN. Test sudan-type hay for nitrates.
• Determine species and varieties of forages to be seeded in fall.
• Re-evaluate grazing plans and adjust rotations.
• Consider drought plans.
• Evaluate reserve herd days.

Horticulture
 • Collect leaf samples for laboratory analyses in order to determine the amount of fertilizers to apply next February or March. See our Web site for the leaf sample technique and submitting form.
• Install traps by mid-July to monitor for pecan weevil adult emergence.

Livestock-Cattle
 • Provide free-choice mineral supplement; monitor consumption. Include chlortetracycline, if needed, for control of anaplasmosis. CTC should be consumed at the rate of 500 to 700 mg/cow/day.
• Continue fly control program. Re-charge sock-type fly wipe every 2 to 3 weeks or after a rain.
• Monitor cattle for pinkeye; treat as indicated in your herd health protocol.
• Ensure cattle have ample available water; avoid working cattle during the heat of the day.

Spring Calving Cow-Calf
• Monitor breeding activity and cow heat cycles.

Summer Stockers
• Provide protein supplement with ionophore, if economically feasible.
• Re-implant according to manufacturer's recommendations.

Fall Calving Cow-Calf
• Supplement for heifers, if needed, to achieve 65-70% of mature weight at breeding time (late October).
• Review cow performance records with your livestock specialist.
• Review herd health program with your veterinarian.
• Evaluate body condition score of cows. Cows should be in condition score of 5.5-6.0. Sort and supplement to achieve BCS of 6.0 by September, if needed.
• Prepare for calving season.

Soils
 • Collect soil samples.
• Fertilize warm-season pastures, if additional forage is needed.
• Apply lime, if recommended by soil test.
• Begin purchasing fertilizer for small grain and cool-season perennial pastures.

Wildlife
 • If sport fishing is a goal, evaluate fish populations with seine surveys in ponds not seined this year.
• Monitor bird nest boxes.
• If recreational leasing, negotiate the lease.
